Installation Instructions

The Bard's Tale emulation launcher plays games using DOSBox.

We've endeavored to make this version of the games portable and future proof. If you are using Windows or Mac we've bundled DOSBox with the games for your convenience. Feel free to upgrade or replace the included versions of DOSBox (located at: /data/dosbox/) the launcher should *hopefully* continue to work new versions long into the future.

Linux and BSD users will need to install DOSBox themselves. Your distribution provider will be able to install significantly better versions of DOSBox, than we can ever hope to bundle in for you. Use your package manager to find and install: dosbox

You can download and find the latest DOSBox information here: http://www.dosbox.com

Transferring Characters

The Bard's Tale II and III let you transfer characters from the previous games to continue your adventures. Normally you'd be forced to swap real floppy diskettes; but in this emulated version: a virtual floppy drive "A:\" has been created and shared among the games.

To transfer your characters, follow the instructions below:

The Bard's Tale I -> The Bard's Tale II

  1. Save your Bard's Tale I party in the game at the Adventurer's Guild, and exit the game.
  2. Start the Bard's Tale launcher and use option 4, then option 1 to export your characters from The Bard's Tale I.
  3. Start The Bard's Tale II and go to "Disk options" in the Adventurer's Guild, then select "Load Bard 1 member".
  4. Select which characters or party you wish to transfer.

The Bard's Tale II -> The Bard's Tale III

  1. Save your Bard's Tale II party in the game at the Adventurer's Guild, and exit the game.
  2. Start the Bard's Tale launcher and use option 4, then option 2 to export your characters from The Bard's Tale II.
  3. Start The Bard's Tale III and go to "Transfer Characters" in The Ruin, then select "2) Bards II". Type in "A:" and press Enter to select the correct drive.
